Salvatore Ferragamo's macramé sweater

I rarely use the word, but I think this piece from Salvatore Ferragamo's Spring 2009 collection, is simply delicious.

Although its appearance from the runway to a new editorial by Numéro Homme brings the sweater closer to reality, I still wonder exactly how one would style it for day-to-day use. I'm thinking it may be good to wear it over a sheer collarless shirt that is slightly longer.

Also amazing are Ferragamo's updates on the ruffled shirt. The first one looks like a native fruit with fabric sunbursts.

They look like bleached costumes for a fiesta.

The buttons on this next sweater look as big as the seeds of a large fruit. The beige jacket is architectural enough for a stylish weekend tent.

Numéro Homme: Outlaws

Popular culture imagines gypsies in bright and colorful clothes, usually in many layers, with the men wearing hats and the women in loose skirts. They are pictured traveling in wagons.

This editorial tries to capture that vibe with the location and the props. The result is cowboy meets country Englishman meets shaman.

Though rules are mostly followed and there are not that many particularly amazing pieces, the total impact is captivating. The motif is established by hats, fur, hair, jewelry, feathers, and ethnic tassles.

These embrodered cotton pants by Alexander McQueen look like something from a Bangkok market. On his silver ring, I think, is lapis lazuli.

Without rings, many of these outfits would fall flat. Such a small but vital accessory.

The floppy bowties add ease.

Besides the basic shirts and plain trousers, the striped and plaid pants keep the looks modern, not to mention commercial and attuned to the staples of the season.

What makes this outfit the editorial's piece de résistance? Besides the silver bowtie and skull, the jewelry, and the feathers, it is the way the ruffled collar matches the checkered wool trousers.

Given the right jacket, each man gains the swagger of a cape.

Cowboy day

It begins with a messenger's shoulder strap, which turns into a belt.

Then skinny jeans and boots. The floral (not discernible) over plaid patterned shirt is a welcome deviation.

Some coffee for inspiration, but in the end, I guess not enough dust, rocks, and gravel to roughen up the outfit.

Strangely, that's what bowler hats and animal print shirts accomplish in this editorial shot.

Numéro Homme: Splash

Summer, it seems, is here - at least for bi-annual magazines. And even if all the outfits are tuxedos, the dominant color is still blue.

Fantastic colors and combinations, but I can't help but imagine taking each separate piece from these outfits and incorporating them into everyday wear. Like this red jacket with jeans.

In this case, maybe just the shorts. This purple and aqua leather jacket looks sweet as candy.

On the other hand, these Ray-Ban and Dior Homme shades should only be worn with neons and fluorescents, or maybe even pastel, but the colorful palettes must be kept.

The Dior goggles go better with nylon, neoprene, and other technically enhanced fabrics.

Oh, and don't forget Damien Hirst. He can rock any fabric.

Even though the Cyclops (the mythical creature) doesn't really see that far, this trend may be worth the narrow enjoyment.

Numéro Homme: Performance

Leggings are for dancing, and so are skirts, as long as they are paired with them. What other way to say this than by the modern version of stop motion photography?

I must say that, along with Hedi Slimane's photos of skaters wearing his Dior Homme creations, these are the most convincing images I have seen of men wearing skirts. Movement, it's all about movement.

And color, which this editorial so spiritedly splashes around with: like spring and summer after an overly oppressive winter. Who says man skirts have to be black and gothic?

Something you can't do with bermuda shorts.

If summer has to deal with the color black, it will have to be in patterns. More than one, even more than two. Let the combinations be dizzying. Let them move!
