The striking simplicity of Jil Sander's spring and summer

Do you think the bowl-cut hairdos and the hems from Jil Sander's Spring 2010 show follow a curved leitmotif? Whatever Raf Simons's intentions, the move is brilliant. The hairstyle perfectly complements not just the contours of the pieces, but also their pared down look.

I really like the hybridization of tees, tanks, shirts, and even cardigans with jackets and coats.

The subtlety is both strong and easy. The asymmetrical closures of the jackets make them almost feminine, but the shape of the hems grounds them – the contradiction makes them stylishly sophisticated.

There is a feeling of lightness because of the fabrics, in spite of being sternly cut. The layering of curved hems is silently beautiful.

These suits may appear aseptic, more for use by orderlies than by businessmen, but their sheer simplicity, which rests on master tailoring, make them suitable uniforms for ascetic artists and thinkers.

Fear not, Jil Sander also presents more traditional navy suits – in the requisite hems and closures that give an edge to the sharp, wing-tip lapels.
